01 The Origin Story
1.1 The Origin
Lotus Mandala
This work draws from the lotus medallion at Stupa 2 in Sanchi, an early example of Buddhist relief design that has evolved into countless variations across India. Shown here is the blue lotus or Utpala in Sanskrit. In ancient Indian architecture, the lotus mandala symbolizes purity, spiritual awakening, and the cosmos. Geometrically, the unfolding lotus petals map perfectly to the sacred mandala grid. Together, they represent the divine navel of creation (Padmanabha) from which the universe emerges. (Medium: Graphite and acrylic on paper mounted to artist's board; Year: 2026; Artist: DeWitt Kendall)
1.2 The gesture
Graphite and acrylic on canvas
The artwork begins as a graphite drawing mapped onto the garment pattern, then built up with acrylic in expressive strokes and textures. Graphite is reintroduced in the final stage to enhance depth and definition.
1.3 The translation
From canvas to fabric
The artwork is carefully captured in high resolution, preserving every layer, edge, and variation. Colours are refined to remain true to the original, then translated onto fabric through precision printing.
1.4 The form
Where it finds shape
The artwork comes to life on the garment, placed with intention, yet allowed to move with the body. As the fabric drapes and shifts, the composition reveals itself differently from every angle.
