01 The Origin Story

1.1 The Origin

Temple Tree

Inspired by the iron-and-copper oxidation on a door in Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi, recreated and combined with traditional Jaipuri block printing rendered boldly at a strikingly large scale. The motif is the Sthala Vriksha (स्थलवृक्ष) or "temple tree." In South Indian traditions, it refers to a specific, unique sacred tree revered as the guardian and life-force at the center of a temple but also draws inspiration from the mythological Kalpataru or Kalpadruma "wish-fulfilling tree", representing a cosmic entity that grants all desires and sustains the universe. (Medium: Acrylic on artist's board; Size: 40 x 60 in; Year: 2026; Artist: DeWitt Kendall)
