01 The Origin Story

1.1 The Origin

The Bodhisattva Within

This version of the Bodhisattva series invites the wearer to carry within him his inner Bodhisattva- one who reached enlightenment yet stayed to help others on their paths. The imagery is that of the Gandhara region of Northern India (c. 300 AD), where Hindu and Buddhist culture fused with the Greek aesthetics carried along the Silk Route, giving rise to masculine, princely figures. The primary image is a pen and ink rendering of a Gandhara Bodhisattva statue fragment held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. (Medium: Hand drawing, copperplate engraving style; Year: 2026; Artist: DeWitt Kendall)

1.2 The gesture

Hand-drawn copperplate engraving

The primary figure was drawn entirely by hand in in pen-and-ink using the copperplate engraving style.

1.3 The translation

From canvas to fabric

The engraving was reproduced onto textured pure cotton.

1.4 The form

Where it finds shape

The artwork comes to life on the garment, placed with intention, yet allowed to move with the body. As the fabric drapes and shifts, the composition reveals itself differently from every angle.
