01 The Origin Story
1.1 The Origin
The Creator Within
Inspired by a visit to giant Brahma figure at the Elephana Caves off the coast of Mumbai this new, original artwork is based on both an 1809 engraving in the collection of the Royal Acadamy of Arts in London which was drawn to document ancient Indian statuary. (Likely Brahma arising from the navel of the giant reclining figure at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram.) The other reference is the famous 11th Century stone 'Brahma of Goa' in the temple at Carambolim (also called Brahma-Karmali) in northeast Goa. In both these references Brahma is shown as a sage (thus bearded) and as and the first member of the Trimurti, the holy trinity that also includes Vishnu (the preserver) and Shiva (the destroyer). Shown here rising from a lotus representing the manifestation of the universe out of the cosmic waters Brahma is responsible for the creation of the universe and all living beings. (Original medium: Pen and Ink combined with collage; Size: 36 x 48 in Year: 2026; Artists: DeWitt Kendall and Rostislaw Tsarenko)
